the p51 started with the allison engine, which didn't perform so well at high altitudes. stick a merlin in the thing and make it a winner. the corsair got one of the biggest engines available, swung the biggest prop, and got the nickname "whistling death" from the japanese soldiers.

nice study of this bird.

the f4u got the pratt & whitney r-2800 double wasp engine, two row 18 cylinder,2800 cu in (46liter), 2000hp, the only engine that could swing that 13 foot prop. keep up the good work!

Wonderful plane. Certainly one of our best fighters of the Pacific Theater. F4U Vought Corsair had a Pratt & Whitney engine. It was an American engine and made by an American company. The Mustang had the Merlin engine and that was designed by the British and certainly was an big improvement over the previous engine. Just thought the misconseption should be cleared up. Anyway beautiful plane I love it.
